Bordeaux is known as a city rich with culture. One of the best methods to discover all that the region has to offer is to explore its prestigious museums, exhibitions and art galleries. A Bordeaux tour is not complete without experiencing the city’s culture through its art collections and historical museums.

One of the largest provincial history museums, Musée d'Aquitaine displays collections from prehistoric times through modern day. Especially interesting are pieces from the 18th century, considered Bordeaux’s golden age. Equally impressive is the Musée des Beaux Arts, home to one of the finest painting galleries in France. Visitors get a close look at the works of some of the most renowned artists, including Veronèse, Rubens, Van Dyck, Renoir, Delacroix, Redon, Lhote, Picasso, and Matisse.

Known as the “City of Art and History,” Bordeaux is home to 362 monuments historiques, with only Paris having more in all of France. Many of these historical monuments date back to Roman times, with the UNESCO World Heritage List deeming the city as “an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble.”

Contributing to Bordeaux’s designation is the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Museum of Decorative Arts), with the museum itself a work of art.
