* Excursion - The underground monuments of Saint Emilion can only be visited with the certified guide.
40 km east of Bordeaux lies a plain that joins a steep slope. At the top of this slope is a Gothic bell tower: it is the bell tower of Monolithic Church of Saint Emilion.
At the foot of the hill, we will see the ruined city, located in the form of an amphitheatre. Today, the walls of the fortress are half destroyed, and huge gaps allow you to see the interior of the city and its ancient monuments.
Around this ruined city, as well as below, reign vast caves carved into the rocks by human hands. And on these rocks grows the great wine of Saint Emilion.
In one of these caves with an underground source, a hermit, the monk Emilion, settled in the 8th century, and the chapel next to his hermitage was undoubtedly transformed into a huge underground church dug in a block of rock, which is today considered one of the most special churches in France and unique in the world of its kind. This 11th century church, the largest in Europe, is called a monolithic church. And the cave of the hermit Emilion, which became Saint, as well as the catacombs (the underground cemetery) of the 8th century and the 14th-century Trinity Chappel are called Underground Monuments of Saint Emilion.
